The statue of liberty is a monument to this great country's ability to help the poor, the tired, the down trodden and the persecuted.  Throughout the world every day there are people who flee their homeland. They are looking for a life of freedom that they could not find in their own country. 
 
According to the lutheran immigration and refugee service there are 12 million refugees in the world.  There are many who cannot go home and seek a new life in a new country. Many times they come here with just the clothes on their backs, having to leave everything behind.  They come seeking protection for themselves and their loved ones. Many of them can and do make an immeasurable economic and cultural contribution to our communities.
 
 

THIS DOES NOT EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE THE TRAUMA AND HORRORS THEY HAVE ENDURED. THEY FACE HARDSHIPS THAT MOST AMERICANS CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO COMPREHEND. THEY ARE NOT A FACELESS MASS. THEY ARE FATHERS, MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS, SONS, GRANDPARENTS. THEY ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH THEIR OWN UNIQUE STORIES OF SUFFERING AND SURVIVAL. EACH HAVE HOPES AND DREAMS, JUST LIKE THE REST OF US.

Since 9-11 it is understandable that security has become strict. No one has a problem with terrorists and criminals being jailed and deported. So what is the problem? The problem is that many of our immigrants are here for a better life. They come seeking a new life in a free country. Every year there are only a small number that is granted  citizenship in this country.They must be interviewed, investigated and approved to become citizens. Many do not become citizens. Often they are rounded up by secret service, immigration,  the police and thrown in jail. For months and even years they sit in jail trying to become citizens, their fate in the hands of strangers. All the while they are being treated as criminals. They are torn from their families and children, often transferred from jail to jail, state to state. So often their families do not even know where they are. they are no where near where their families are, and often cannot visit.
